On my mountain bike- when I’m in top gear, as in the gear where i pedal slowest and go fastest, my pedals keep suddenly slipping round, no resistance, for a split second, as if they’re not engaged with the gears. It can throw me off balance a bit and want to fix it asap. I know nothing about cycle maintainence!
How do i fix it?

Hi, I am not a bike mechanic to qualify my answer so take it for what its worth.
I think your rear hub maybe in need of maintenance or repair. There might be a stiff or frozen link in your chain. The High limit on your rear derailleur may need adjusting.
You should take it in to a bike shop and they can tell you quickly whats wrong before you damage your bike or hurt yourself.

This sounds like “chain skip” which happens when your drivetrain needs a good clean and lube, or your chain or cogs are worn-out.
First, learn to do a basic clean and lube:
Next, if it’s still skipping, take it to the bike shop and shell out the cash for a new chain and cassette. It will be around $100 total, maybe less depending on the bike.
Good luck
Scott
p.s. unless you spend a lot of time going down really big hills, you should hardly ever use that gear. Most of the time on level ground, most people are in the middle / middle combination.

To follow up on Scotts answer, make sure there is no crud stuck in the teeth in the small cog which could prevent the chain from properly engaging, but there are other possibilites:
The derailleur may need a tweak – if it isn’t dropping far enough over it may be _trying_ to change gears, which will give the ‘skipping’ feeling. You may be able to hear this by pedalling very slowly, then shift from the second smallest to smallest cog. If it shifts but you hear alot of noise, it needs a tweak.
Another test is to see if it skips anywere else. If you pedal very hard, like standing up when you go up hill, and it skips in other gears, the you most likely _do_ need a new chain and cogset.
If it only skips when in the smallest cog in the back, then it’s either crud or a slight adjustment. If you clean it and it still skips, take it to a shop. There are several adjustments they will make to get it to shift correctly.
