The application of the name “bungee cord” in technical and consumer markets has become roughly as universal as “Kleenex” in the facial tissue industry.  Although the particular roots of the word “bungee” are undefined, a 1938 source suggests that the word “bungee” was initially employed to refer to a type of elastic cord that was used to propel gliders in a way comparable in its simplest form to the method by which jet fighters are often propelled from aircraft carriers. Without a doubt, bungee cords now sold to consumers would never be recommended for such use!

Today, many varieties of so-called “bungee cords” are used to tie down products without needing to tie knots in twine or cable. Inexpensive, solid rubber- and cloth-enclosed bungee cords, with metal or plastic links on either end, are marketed as general utility products; however, consumers should beware when purchasing such seemingly inexpensive bungee cords because these cords are usually fabricated in third-world countries with substandard materials. Usually, these cords’ warning labels indicate that they cannot be used outdoors, in certain temperature circumstances or for other uses imagined by consumers. In addition, buyers should realize that these cables only come in certain lengths, eventually requiring customers to purchase numerous varying sizes of cords to fit each specific situation.

An item just released to the market that excite traditional bungee cord users is the adjustable rubber strap.
