Baz Abroad.
I cycle to work and back, and the time needed is 20 to 25 mins, good cycling, track and road.
How can I get the most out of that to burn off calories ? and use it in the best way possible, ie, speed, gears etc.
Thanks.
(I normally cycle further on weekends, an hours cycle, my job is physically demanding and I lift the odd weights too)
Shortest route, ok I do not take the shortest route, I extend the cycle sometimes to about 45 mins,
problems is shift work and differing start and finish times, its difficult to go off and do a 45 min sports cycle when u finish at 3 am in the morning,
so I say basically the minimum I do is 20 min each way cycle the rest is a bonus.

Keep at a constant speed and to loose weight stay on a low gear to tone up stick on a high gear at a slower speed. Also if you want tone up try riding stood up.

Who says you have to take the shortest route?

How can a person get the most out of cycling?
By spinning the pedals at your ideal RPM. Find a gear range that allows you to apply a light resistance on the pedals when spinning.
By keeping it fun.
Continuing challenging yourself with hill climbs & long (over 1 hour) rides on the weekend.
Joining a bike group & doing some group rides,
Maybe give bike touring a go (the organised supported rides are heaps of fun!)
You are doing enough riding during the week, so just try to balance it out with eating healthy foods.
And remember, there’s more to cycling than just burning calories, there’s also alot of fun to be had.

I biked to and from work every day 40 minutes. That’s enough for me.
